Would an Asexual let a spouse cheat on them? A recent Guardian column asks that question, although the letter is written from the viewpoint of the Asexual spouse.
Sexless marriages and Asexual marriages are not the same thing. The woman who wrote the letter is asking for permission to have an affair with another woman’s husband because she is in a sexless marriage. Asexuals may engage in sexless marriages, but this is not universally true.
Even if the person telling the story really did hit it off with an old school friend, she should not look for permission to cheat with someone else’s husband unless that person’s spouse is comfortable with the arrangement. Polyamorous relationships are controversial in some circles, but they are acceptable between consenting adults.
If the spouses do not agree to a polyamorous relationship, the Asexual people in both marriages, if they are Asexual, may have the reason they need to leave their sexual partners. Communication can help prevent these couples from making a larger mistake and destroying even more lives. If the husband has given the wife permission to have an affair, the wife should look elsewhere than her old school friend for sexual companionship.
