Daily Californian Columnist Explores Asexual Romantic Relationships

College newspaper columnists do not usually gain little attention outside of their college. The number of college newspaper articles addressing Asexuality has far outpaced the number of stories in the mainstream media. This is both good and bad. It is also representative of the age group that most commonly identifies as Asexual. A recent article, called Sex is the Biggest Nothing explores how romantic relationships form and the problems that can occur in each type of relationship.

The writer starts out with a story about one of her unnamed girlfriends. This girlfriend dated a boy who identified as Asexual. The relationship ends because the Asexual boy made no sexual advances towards the unnamed female. Now, it is possible that the author of the column could have made this part of the story up, but any Asexual who has attempted dating knows this story. The couple went a little farther but the relationship ultimately ended. The sexual partner simply didn't feel that she was desired. This part of the story is again, familiar to many Asexuals who have pursued romantic relationships.

The story relates nothing that has not been said before, but where the narrative takes an interesting turn is what the person says after the relationship ends and the friend pursues new boyfriends. She believes that the relationship with the Asexual was one of the better ones she had. The unnamed friend says that it was one of the few relationships that was not about sex, but focused more on her desires.

It is possible that this story is entirely made up. It does read like something that has been created merely to show that a non-traditional relationship can offer something unique to both parties. If it is made up, the author of the “Sex is the Biggest Nothing” column at least has spent some time in Asexual communities seeing what the common problems with romantic relationships are.

The author of this article does not have excessive dating experience. Her experience spans a total of two weeks. There are those who have considerably more to add and are welcome to do so.
