Why is Cake an Asexual Symbol?

Cake has been adopted as an Asexual symbol, although it is not clear why.(Ed Note: Perhaps because if one were to give Asexuals a choice between cake & sex, it's safe to say that they would choose cake). The history behind it also seems somewhat clouded. As with many Internet memes, it does not matter how something got started. What the readers need to know at this point, if they are not familiar with it, is what it means.

The idea of using cake started either on the AVEN message boards or on its predecessor, the Yahoo Group Haven for the Human Amoeba. Discussions would occasionally center on cake and how it is better than a certain other activity. Over time, cake became the preferred greeting. Once offering cake became a standard way to greet newcomers on message boards.

Today, there are probably hundreds of cake themed blogs and jokes on Asexual message boards and blogs. The editorial section of this site is even named Cake Recipes. Cake has not been a widely recognized symbol for Asexuality outside of the Asexual community, but few things have.
