The word squish came into usage on AVEN several years ago. It has not seen widespread use despite the best efforts of the word’s promoters. It does not matter if the word sees widespread use or not. An increasing number of Asexuals use this word, although it is still slang. A person discovering their Asexual identity for the first time may see the word and not know what it means. It is a simple concept to grasp.
How a crush works is well understood. A person has a romantic interest in someone else. The subject of the crush is usually not aware of it. A squish works in the same way but the romantic feelings are removed. If an Asexual individual says that they are squishing on someone, it means that they would really like to have a friendship with the object of the squish.

I really do like the term squish, but I think friend crush is better for the feeling. It's more known already & it's self explanatory. Same with "zucchinni" to "platonic life partner", only I never liked "zucchinni" to begin with.
