Can a guy be Asexual?

Yes, Virginia. A guy can be Asexual. Asexuality isn't just for women (despite what people may say otherwise). And it's rather kinda annoying that Asexuality is thought of as inherently feminine, when no other sexual orientation is thought of as either inherently feminine or inherently masculine. (Though granted, straight men may have their heterosexuality called into question if they're not chasing after every woman they see).

The Asexual Identity

While some see Asexuality as the simplest, most straight forward sexuality, others see it as a complicated matter. Aromantic Asexuality is a very defined group, but romantic Asexuality can encompass many more possibilities.

Aromantic Asexuality is a lack of sexual or romantic desire towards any individual of any gender. This doesn’t prevent a person having a perfectly healthy relationship, they just lack the desire to pursue one.

What is Asexual erasure?

A sign that serves as an example of Asexual erasure

(Note: Asexual News is not responsible for the content of this graphic. It is simply a link to a Tumblr blog).

Asexual Erasure is a term that gets use by Asexuals quite a bit. Bisexual erasure is a similar condition that Bisexuals experience. What a person may not know is what the term means. Erasure is the accidental or intentional attempt to ignore the existence of a person’s orientation. One such example is found here, taken from a Tumblr user who goes by the alias of Aceslutshamers.

The most important example of Asexual erasure occurs in the medical and psychiatric communities. Psychologists and Psychiatrists use a manual that describes Asexuality but does not even mention the word Asexual directly. The existence of HSDD is an example of unintentional erasure. The condition has improved only slightly with the wording of the DSM 5.

There Should be Asexual safe spaces in the real world

Asexuals on the Internet have created safe spaces for Aces on the web. There are no such places that cater to Asexuals exclusively in the real world. There are spaces that give women safe spaces and groups that give gays and lesbians safe spaces. The lack of safe spaces for Asexuals means that they often have to turn to LGBT groups. Some groups will turn down safe spaces to Heteroromantic Asexuals, sometimes with the statement Heteroromantic Asexuals do not experience the same kinds of problems.

Libido is separate from orientation

People often think that low libido is a cause of Asexuality. Our libidoes fluctuate throughout our lives, but libido does not determine a person‘s sexual orientation. It only determines how often they feel the need to act upon it. When the term Asexuality gets applied to people, it means that the person is attracted to neither gender. Asexuals often have a sex drive that is not directed at anything.

A person who is Asexual does not have a medical condition, a mental condition and does not need the intervention of a professional. When a person’s sex drive suddenly changes, whether they are Asexual or not, it could indicate a deeper problem.
