What Do The Recent AVEN Resignations Mean?

Nearly half a dozen AVEN administrators and moderators resigned last week. Bipolar Bear said that the resignation occurred because of a lack of team cohesion and leadership. While the stated reasons played a role in the decision to resign, it is more likely the result of a political split within the Asexual Visibility and Education Network.

Even something as simple as an Internet message board is not free of politics. The real reason may never be known. It would require one of the current or former moderators to break agreements they made when they took on the position.

If a disagreement over several issues caused the political split, it is not the the first time it has happened in the organization's 10-year history. Several forums, including Apositive, started because the founders took issue with the way things were on AVEN. Most of these forums did not survive long after their inception.

The resignations come after several controversial decisions made by the admod team. One involved the decision not to create an Aromantic forum. The forum had previously addressed the issue by using a single pinned thread. Jay had announced the possibility of another pinned thread to address the issues of race and Asexuality. It was never clear if a forum to address the issues surrounding race and Asexuality would be added later.

Drama surrounding the way the largest Asexual message board is run may be disheartening to some people, but the forums will probably continue to serve their users. No one needs to worry that AVEN is going anywhere because of a split in its leadership. It has happened before. It will happen again.
