Growing Pains Continue

People who pay attention to the Internet Asexual communities know conflict arose between the Tumblr Asexual community and the AVEN forums. While many people see the situation as another Internet argument, it is a positive sign. It means that viable alternatives to the first set of Asexual message boards have emerged.

The initial accusation centered around the unwritten rules of AVEN. It accused users of encouraging rape culture. Many of the complaints were issued by members of Tumblr's social justice community. The microblogging format allows more open freedom than a moderated message board. The downside is that the social networking site's format leads to wild speculation.

This is not the first time the Asexual community has experienced growing pains, but it does show that another site can challenge the established site and be taken seriously. It will almost certainly happen again. It is easy to see the situation in a negative light. There is an unseen positive aspect to it. There is no longer one single message board serving most of the Asexual community. (Ed note: Tumblr is a blogging/social networking site, not a message board).
