Is It A Good Idea For Asexual Groups To Ally With Progressive Organizations?

Asexual groups often view themselves as members of the larger LGBT community. This should not be discouraged, but the activists may want to slow down. Is it safe to rely on these groups to pursue Asexual issues? LGBT groups push for greater Gay and Lesbian rights, but they often ignore their other constituencies.

The same-sex marriage debate is the most obvious example of this trend. While pushing for marriage equality, GLAAD, HRC and other groups are not fighting for employment and housing protections for non-gender conforming individuals. The same sex marriage debate is in the public eye, but other important issues should not be forgotten.

Asexual groups join with LGBT groups because the Asexual groups have limited resources. Even the largest Ace organization barely takes in enough money to cover server hosting costs. Many people in the Asexual community use free hosting services or pay for the costs out of their own pocket.

People counter that Homormantic, Biromantic and Transgender Asexuals fall under the LGBT umbrella, and it makes sense for Asexuals to ally with LGBT groups. This makes forging alliances valuable, but Asexual groups need to remember their own goals of agenda and not get lost in larger political concerns.
