The idea of a television ad campaign to promote Asexuality would spread awareness. The idea has been discussed before, but it has never gone beyond the planning stages. The primary problem for an Asexual ad campaign is one of cost. The largest Asexual organization, the Asexual Visibility and Education Network does not have the resources to launch such a campaign.
Asexual visibility efforts have focused on the Internet, but the Internet visibility efforts have one key flaw. They do not target people who do not already have an interest in Asexuality. This means that the Asexual organizations are often preaching to the choir. The online efforts do not always reach people who do not already know about Asexuality. There is a way that the Internet has not been used to increase Asexual awareness that would reach people who do not already know about Asexuality. A non-targeted banner campaign would do more for visibility than spamming social media.
Banner advertising, especially non-targeted banner advertising can be bought relatively cheaply through a variety of ad networks. The banners are not placed on Asexual sites. The companies that distribute the ads will display the banners throughout their network, increasing the chance that someone who is unfamiliar with the concept of Asexuality will be exposed to the concept.
There are drawbacks to this campaign. Radio or television spots would be much more effective in spreading the word. Radio and television shows have a larger audience. Because the shows have a larger audience, the ad time is more expensive to buy. Unless AVEN or another group can launch a grass roots effort to raise the money, an alternative solution is needed.
You Dawg! We all know that asexual news has deep pockets and what better way to spend it than on a superbowl ad!
