Is It Possible to Shift News Media Coverage to More than Just Female Asexuals?

The Sun’s recent article let everyone know that female Asexuals exist. While no one questions the existence of female Asexuals, it does not help to have the orientation seen as an exclusively female phenomenon. The amount of gender bending that occurs in the Asexual community alone makes this an interesting phenomenon. Even though over four percent of Asexuals identify as transgender, this has not caught the attention of most members of the media.

DSM-5 Will Be Released in May

The DSM-5 is being pushed forward despite the controversy and the problem with the current edition. Some of the changes, including moving Asperger’s Syndrome into the Autism Spectrum Disorder, do not have much support. Mood Dysregulation Disorder made it into the manual despite concerns that it would increase the number of children on medication.

Perhaps the most telling criticism comes from the British Psychological Society. Members of the society believed that the new diagnostic manual expanded the range of diseases to include normal human behavior. Allen Frances, the head of the DSM-IV task force called the book a disgrace.

(Trigger Warning: Anti-Tumblrism) How Not To Be a Special Snowflake

Critics of Tumblr’s social justice communities often use the term special snowflake to describe Asexuals and other bloggers. The social justice bloggers often respond to this poorly. Instead of automatically railing against their critics, they ought to take the advice of Sir Winston Churchill. Chruchill that said criticism serves a valuable purpose. He compared it to pain in the body. It draws a person's attention to something that is wrong.

Are The Words You Use Used By Other People?

If a Tumblr user finds that he consistently has to define what he, she, it, zie or whatever the preferred pronouns is means that user may want to stop using those words. Yes, language changes all of the time, and new words are often added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Nevertheless, long-winded faqs with definitions of words a person has made up probably aren’t convincing anyone.

You Can't Comment on Issues Not Directly Relevant to You

This is by far one of the most ridiculous stances taken by social justice warriors. If white abolitionists had not spoken out on slavery, it may not have been repealed. If Heterosexuals had not spoken out about the treatment of Homosexuals, Homosexuality would still either be a crime or classified as a mental disorder (or possibly both). Valid criticism is not a sign of prejudice.

 You Can Educate Others

If someone does not honestly know what Asexuality is, it’s okay to say someone who does not experience sexual attraction and refer them to AVEN, Anthony F. Bogaert’s book, this site, or Asexual Awareness Week. People who ask a question for information and education do not deserve to be treaty this way. Education is even a word in the name of the largest Asexual organization.

Even the People On Your Side Are Wrong Sometimes

This seems to be something unique to Tumblr, but many users are unwilling to criticize people who agree with them, even when they are making outrageous statements. Do not be afraid to call these people out if they deserve it.

The Critics Can Help You Refine Your Arguments

The critics sprung up because there is a wealth of bizarre material on Tumblr. People willing to post that they support the phrase ‘Die Cis Scum’ ought to be monitored by the FBI and local law enforcement, even if they are not serious. Blogs such as Trigger Warning Social Justice arose because of this. These blogs get a lot wrong as well, but they are open about it. Something that Tumblr’s social justice warriors need to start doing.

HuffPo Live Addresses Issues of Romantic Asexuals

HuffPo live explored the issues surrounding Asexuality, but the host focused on the issues surrounding Asexuality and relationships. While romantic relationships are important to some Asexuals, they do not realize that other Asexuals would rather remain single.

While many people are excited over the coverage, it ignores the existence of Aromantics, and it causes people to assume that all Asexual people want to enter into romantic relationships. The host of this segment did not let viewers know that they would be focusing on Asexual romantic relationships and how they work.
