Awakenings Aren't Where Stuff.co.nz Thinks They Are

Mainstream media outlets still report on the existence of Asexuals as if it were a surprise. Some people have a hard time understanding the concept, but there needs to be a shift in mainstream media coverage to acknowledge what most people already know. Anyone who follows the news with more than a passing interest knows that there are a group of people who do not experience sexual attraction.

The Age and other Australian newspapers recently picked up the story. While the stories provided nice visibility, there is a problem with these articles. The reporters and columnists do their job, but Asexuals themselves should take these stories in different directions and getting the reporters to deal with the issues that Asexuals actually face.

Asexuality and an Asexuality Movement Are Not The Same Thing

Doctor Gloria Brane recently addressed the topic of Asexuality on her Seriously Sexual podcast. The segment occurs early in the podcast, and the listener quickly hears that Brane has little to say that has not been said before. She addresses Asexuality as a medical issue and then as a psychological issue. There is little to comment on. Brane could have started out the show on a different footing if she had visited AVEN. One problem in particular comes from her describing Asexuality as a movement rather than an orientation.

Certain Asexual sites, including this one, have referred to the Asexuality movement. The staff of Asexual News expect people to know that a movement is represented by organizations. Asexuals may or may not have a libido, a fact which Brane glossed over briefly. What people who discuss an orientation that came out of the closet only recently need to do is distinguish between a movement and the orientation, something she did not do on her Seriously Sexual podcast.

Social Psychology of Asexuality

There are people out there who have a much better grasp of the issues being presented in this video. It is best to leave the commentary to someone who can decipher it far more easily.

Your Mother and Father May Not Understand Asexuality; But Give Theam a Break on Their Days Anwyay

May 13 is Mother’s Day. Anyone who spends time in the Asexual community sees a lot of complaining about how parents do not get Asexuality or they do not understand. Older Aces roll their eyes and simply ignore the complaints. It is not that the older people do not understand the complaints. They made many of the same complaints themselves when they were teenagers. Teen Aces need to know one thing. Parents do not live forever. Even if they find their parents annoying now, everyone eventually faces the death of a parent (unless one dies before their parents do).

The mother of the author of this article died several years ago, after locking herself in her room for several days. Even though her final days were spent in a reality that was separate from the rest of the world, she was sorely missed after her death. The events that led up to the untimely demise would have affected anyone badly.

Frances Shani Parker Sheds More Light on Asexual Elder Care

Clara Meadmoore is not a famous Asexual, but she should be. The 105 year old has earned the title of Britain’s oldest virgin. Meadmoore believes that her long life is directly attributed to her Asexuality. The highly spirited woman is a reminder that there are older Asexuals and there will be more of them as time progresses.

SAGE, the LGBT elder advocacy group, has taken little interest in the potential problems. Asexuals, however, should take a second and remember that although the younger voices are more prevalent at the moment, they may become older voices.
