The time may be right for a female doctor, but will the Doctor stay Asexual if this gender change happens?

John Barrowman does not plan on reprising his role in Torchwood in the near future, but the pansexual character did say that he would not mind playing the twelfth doctor. Barrowman, whose Jack Harkness character started out on Doctor Who, has been known for being one of the first characters on television to engage in intimate relations with a member of the same sex. Harkness's character's sexuality is the opposite of the character of the Asexual time lord.

However, Harkness was not so much concerned about his ability to play the role, according to the Press Association. He thought it might be time for the twelfth incarnation of the Time Lord to be a woman. He even added that he would put on a dress and play the female time lord if the show's producers could not find anyone else to fulfill the role.

Barrowman may have jokingly suggested that he play the role, but he was not at a loss for suggesting the actual female lead. The Torchwood actor believes that Catherine Tate could play the role well.

A female doctor might be an interesting change to the long-running series. Writer Stephen Moffat could easily write in the female doctor without too many problems, although it would be interesting to see if a female doctor would keep the character's trademark Asexuality or if the writers would try to create a love interest for the character just to deal with societal expectations. The one place where Asexual men have not been largely invisible is on television. An asexual male sticks out. Monk, Spock and Sheldon Cooper are all examples. There is one example on the ABC Family series Huge.

Neither Moffat nor the BBC has given any indication that the Doctor's gender will change in the twelfth incarnation. Barrowman's speculation may be nothing more than wishful thinking. Even if it is wishful thinking, it is still a neat idea.
