Star Trek fans have long been able to attend conventions dedicated to their favorite show. These conventions happen across the United States and parts of Canada. Many of the Star Trek conventions in the United States pay homage to other science fiction series as well. A Star Trek convention may contain people dressed in Klingon garb who are Doctor Who fans. Diehard fans of the British science fiction phenomenon rarely have the same pleasure. The BBC has announced its first official convention for Doctor Who since 1983.
The Millennium Center in Cardiff, Wales will host a 3-day event for fans of the series. The BBC plans on selling 1,500 tickets to the three day event. Cast members from the 2005 and earlier shows will be on hand to give presentations to Whovians attending the event.

Fans of Sherlock Holmes did not expect the release of a new Sherlock Holmes novel. Arthur Conan Doyle has not been available to write new Holmes material for over a century. The estate that manages the character and the related copyrights rarely endorses any new novel. Anthony Horowitz produced a new Sherlock Holmes novel, and the Arthur Conan Doyle estate endorsed its production.
Horowitz, who writes murder mysteries and screen plays, has adapted several of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot stories to the big screen. Although the new book, The House of Silk, continues the characters originally created by Doyle, Horowitz expresses his reservation about writers who produce books on the backs of writers who are long dead. Only two authors could affect him in this way. He would like to work with Ian Flemming's James Bond universe. He feels the same way about the Victorian London Sherlock Holmes inhabitants.
