Family Research Council: Star Wars The Old Republic Has Gone to the Dark Side

Gamers reacted to the same-sex romance options with non-player characters with apathy. Gay rights activists responded to the announcement with joy. The Family Research Council, perhaps not following months-old news, recently criticized Bioware for including the same gender romance options in their new MMO.

“In a galaxy not so far far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side. The new video game, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has added a special feature: Gay relationships”, said Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council.

Perkins, who likely has never spent any time playing an MMORPG should not be appalled that Bioware chooses to include sexuality options in a games that are intended for an adult audience. If he spent more time viewing the chat of most players in MMORPGs, he certainly would have far more reason to criticize these games. Even if the makers of the games do not put same-sex romance options in the game, many of the conversations that go on among the players are highly sexual in nature. When people let their children play the game, they have to warn other users to watch their language.

Perkins believes that parents are not celebrating the news, but any responsible parent should not let young children play an MMORPG without monitoring the activity of their children. The social environments provided by MMORPGs are not suitable places for young children. The players who fall within the intended age range for The Old Republic should have already made up their own mind about sex and sexuality. If they share the Conservative Evangelical Christian views on sexuality, it will come as a surprise to many of their fellow players.
