Gender Nonconforming Kids Are At Greater Risk of Abuse, Study Finds

Children who don't conform to their gender prior to age 11 face a greater risk of physical, psychological and sexual abuse, a study finds.

The study is the first to use a population based sample to look at gender non conformity as a risk factor for abuse.

"The abuse examined was perpuated by parents and other adultsĀ at home. Parents need to know that discrimination against gender non conformity affects one in ten kids, affects kids at a young age and has lasting impacts on health", said lead author Andrea Roberts.

The authors say more research is needed to understand why gender non conformity puts kids at a higher risk of abuse.
