Maryland Senate Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Maryland became the eighth state to legalize same-sex marriage on Thursday. Supporters rushed into the streets to celebrate the bill, and Maryland’s Democratic governor, Marin O’Malley has promised to sign the bill into law.

Even if the governor signs the bill into law, it may not survive long. Voters may bring the issue up for a referendum vote. California voters passed the contorversial Proposition 8 measure after a bill allowing same sex marriage was signed into law.

HRC and the American Foundation for Equal Rights applauded the move as a step foward. HRC’s president praised O’Malley for his strong, unwaivering leadership according to On Top Magazine.
