Erie, Illinois School District Bans Materials from GLSEN

Erie, Illinois – The Erie Community School District recently banned materials from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Representatives from the school district have issued a statement saying that no materials promoting same sex lifestyles will be used in the elementary school curriculum.

Parents at the school district complained about Todd Part's “The Family Book.” A passage in the book included a phrase that said some children have two mothers or two fathers. In a move that some people are calling an overreaction, the school district banned all materials promoting alternative lifestyles at the elementary school level.

All materials, including materials designed to discourage bullying, will be removed from the curriculum. Not every parent in the school district agreed with the ban. Hundreds of parents have signed a petition asking the school district to reverse its decision.
