LGBT blogs, mainstream news sources, and radio talk show hosts addressed the Chick-Fil-A controversy over the past several days. Many people focused on the statements made by the CEO of the company and by the mayors of Boston and Chicago rather than focusing on the issues of freedom of speech and the potential abuse of mayoral power.
Even people who do not agree with the statements made by Chick-Fil-A's CEO should find the actions of the mayors of Boston and Chicago reprehensible. Rahm Emanuel may feel that the restaurant chain does not represent Chicago's values, but the rest of the country wondered exactly to which Chicago values he refers. The city has long been known for its corruption and high crime rates.
Both mayors are free to state how they feel about Chick-Fil-A's CEO's positions, just as the CEO of the company is free to voice his political views. All of the parties involved will face the consequences of their actions. The mayors are misusing their power and should be removed from office immediately if they use their power to block the construction of new Chick-Fil-A restaurants.
Many Asexuals do not feel as strongly about the issue of same sex marriage as most Gay and Straight people do. Some people support it, and others oppose it. People who dislike the company's position should boycott it rather than trying to get politicians to apply political pressure.
