Doctor Keith Ablow conducted a campaign against Chaz Bono, the son of Sonny and Cher on national television and radio earlier this year. He accused Chaz of not really being a man and of trying to convert people to become transgender.
He also suggested that Bono suffered from a psychotic delusion and compared gender identity disorder to a person who believes that he is a zebra on Fox News. He used the tattoo illusion before Howard Stern. Fox News's Megyn Kelly called Ablow to task on some of his statements, and Ablow resigned from the American Psychiatric Association because of criticism he received during his campaign against the son of the '60s singing duo. The doctor has earned another honor, although it is a dubious one. The San Diego Gay and Lesbian News named him the LGBT Misinformer of the Year by Media Matters.
Ablow also criticized the authors of the DSM-5, although not for the reasons many other people have used. He accused the committee of decimating the field of psychoanalysis. The DSM-5 has faced other criticisms for not being founded on a wholly scientific basis and for expanding diagnoses to include common human behavior.
Dancing with the Stars may have sparked controversy, but if Ablow has any statistics on how many kids were turned transgender because of Chaz Bono's appearance on the show, he may want to bring forth his statistics now.
