(Publisher's Note: Maryland was actually the first state to offer and LGBT license plate.)
Indiana has done something no other state has done. Drivers in the Hoosier state can now purchase LGBT license plates. The LGBT plate will be offered through the Indiana Youth Group according to WFLI 18.
The Indiana Youth Group went through one lawsuit and three applications before its request to offer the license plate received approval. The new plate features a rainbow-colored hands reaching up to the sky on the left-hand side. The rest of the plate contains the license plate information and a space for the car's registration sticker.
Residents of Indiana who want to purchase the new plate for their vehicle need to pay $40 plus the annual registration fee. As with other specialty license plates, some of the funds go to support the Indiana Youth Group, and the rest of the money goes to the coffers of the state.
Other states may follow suit. Specialty license plates are not new. The plates went on sale earlier this year.
