Detroit Couple Sues Michigan Over Same-Sex Couple Adoption Rules

April DeBoer and Janye Rowse are busy raising three children. The two women are nurses and partners. Rowse and DeBoer have lived together for many years. The three children and their mothers live in a suburb of Detroit. Even though the couple and their children have lived together for many years, the couple cannot legally adopt children.

Bower and Rowse recently filed a lawsuit against the state of Michigan. The suit names Governor Rick Snyder and Attorney Bill Schuette as defendants. The motion was filed in a federal district court, alleges that Michigan law violates the couple's civil rights.

Rowse and Deboer's lawsuit may test the validity of such laws in other states. The children were born to biological parents who could not take care of them. Several states have laws preventing same-sex couples from adopting children. The Virginia Board of Social Services approved rules that allowed discrimination against unmarried couple cases in adoption cases.
