Stopbullying.gov addresses LGBT bullying, ignores Asexuals

The Obama administration released a new website to address bullying. Stopbullying.gov features a page dedicated to LGBT issues, although it does not portray bullying as an exclusively LGBT issue.

The search result on Stopbullying.gov for Asexual

Even though Asexuals often become the victims of bullying because of their perceived LGBT status, conducting a search on the website for the word ‘Asexual’ comes up with no results, as seen in the screen shot above. Writers of a television show may have a small excuse for ignoring the existence of Asexuality but a government agency trying to serve all the needs of its constituents does not.

Certain Asexuals might like to write about the huge problem of Ace-specific bullying, but young aces get harrassed because people lump them into the LGBT category. Ignoring the existence of a group does not make things any better for a youth facing this challenge.

Aromantic Asexuals, people who do not experience even romantic attraction to either gender may go onto the site and fail to find information that relates to their specific situation. For a person who finds him/herself in this situation, there is a surprising lack of resources to fall back on.

Flour Bluff Independent School district allows GSA to meet on campus temporarily

Anti gay rights protestor in BostonThe Flour Bluff Independent School District will allow Bianca “Nikki” Peet to form a Gay-Straight Alliance Chapter within the school board. The school board made its decision in a 4-2 vote last weekend after a day long protest outside the school, a threat of legal action against the school by the ACLU, and two petitions protesting the actions of the school board, according to the GLAAD blog.

Peet’s temporary victory may not last long. The vote only allows the chapter of the GSA to meet on campus until the school’s legal position gets reviewed. If a court rules the school’s legal position about non-academic clubs on campus is not valid, the GSA can continue to meet on campus.

Stories of Asexuals getting bullied sought

Signs like this don't workBullying happens to anyone child who other children perceive as different. It does not just occur to LGBT people, although recent media coverage often overlooks this fact. LGBT groups have excluded Asexuals from the discussions about the bullying of youth who identify as queer, although this is often a result of an oversight rather than an intentional omission.

ACLU Demands Flour Bluff let Nikki Peet form Gay-Straight Alliance on campus

Anti-gay rights protestor in Boston, Wikimedia CommonsCorpus Christi, Texas -- The American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement to the Flour Bluff Independent School District demanding school administrators let the GSA form and issue a statement affirming the GSA. The letter accused the school district of stirring up hatred against the club, according to KRIS-TV.

Controversy in the Corpus Christi School started when Nikki Peet asked for permission to open a chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance. The school denied permission and decided to enforce a 2005 policy that does not let clubs without ties to academic activities meet on campus.

Flour Bluff Cadets competing in rifle drill competitionProtestors on both sides of the issue have gathered outside of the Flour Bluff Independent School District Administration buildings over the weekend, according to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. Protestors supporting Nikki Peet held signs sporting the messages “Hate is not a family value” and “Equal Access for All Students.”

Counter protestors, often holding signs sporting Bible passages, question the appropriateness of opening such a school in the High School. Bob Jones, who stood among the counter-protestors, cited moral and religious opposition to homosexuality as his reason for supporting the Flour Bluff's decision to remove all non-academic clubs from campus.
