Asexuals are probably not concerned with the addition of Hyperactive Sexual Desire Disorder to the new edition of the DSM. Even though no psychiatrist would consider diagnosing an Asexual person with any condition that begins with the label hypersexual, the ease with which the hypersexual desire disorder was added should cause Asexuals to worry
Adding the hypersexual condition to the sexual desire spectrum makes it less likely that the psychiatrist will remove the conditions that describe Asexuality as a mental disorder at any time in the near future. The psychiatrists have to ask themselves if they are adding something that falls into the normal range of human behavior.
Although a person can become addicted to sex, the type of personality that can become addicted to the oldest dance can become addicted to anything else. At least one blogger has commented that adding a category for sex addiction gives therapists a valuable tool for their clients. The same blogger added that insurance companies will not cover the treatment for the new category of mental illness.
Getting Hyperactive Sexual Desire Disorder added and keeping a lack of interest in sexual activity as a disorder is not something anyone would like to see.
