Another DSM-5 Criticism: Do Not Shorten the Duration of the Bereavement Exclusion

The Asexual and Transgender communities have expressed concern over the DSM-5, but they are not the only groups who worry. Mental health professionals have expressed concern, but in the debate over HSDD and Gender Identity disorder, Asexual activists and transgender activists have overlooked the change to the bereavement conclusion. A MISS Foundation blog post received 75,000 hits expressing concern over the time reduction in the upcoming edition of the psychiatric bible.

The proposed change to the bereavement exclusion allows someone who is mourning over the loss of a loved one within two weeks of the illness, according to Dr. Joanne Cacciatore of the MISS foundation. Grief is a normal part of the bereavement process, but the time window which a survivor can be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder shrunk from one year to two months when the DSM IV replaced the DSM III.
